LOS ANGELES — The Twilight Saga: New Moon smashed the opening day sales record by raking in $72.7 million at the box office Friday, distributor Summit Entertainment has revealed.
The total shattered the previous single-day domestic ticket sales record of $67.2 million, set last year by The Dark Knight.
The vampire saga also broke the record for midnight ticket sales Thursday night, bringing in a whopping $26.3 million in revenue.
New Moon is the second installment of the hit franchise, which is based on Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling series about a family of vampires.
