As the foundation of one of Hollywood’s most famous May-December pairings curbles, in the wake of Ashton Kutcher‘s affair with 23-year-old party girl Sara Leal, those close to the duo may be saddened, but they’re not surprised. In the latest issue of OK!, we share all the details of Ashton and Demi’s true romance gone horribly wrong!

Demi Moore, 48, and Ashton, 33, once had a true love story, but the union has long been cooling, despite the hot-and-steamy show they put on for the public.
“Their relationship has absolutely suffered in the last couple of years as Ashton’s indiscretions have come out,” a source in their inner circle says, citing the 2010 dalliance Ashton allegedly had with Brittney Jones, who was 21 at the time. “The question is, how much more embarrassment was Demi willing to put up with?”

“It was obvious from the beginning that Ashton and Demi had incredible chemistry,” the insider tells OK!. “He put her on a pedestal and basically did anything and everything to show he was worthy.”
“In many ways, it was a fairy-tale romance. But that has drastically changed.”
A big issue that festered from the start — before Ashton’s cheating ever hit the press — was their inability to have a child, the pal of the couple maintains. Ashton desperately wanted a baby with Demi. “He used to tell everyone Demi was a ‘genetic freak,’ meaning the rules of age didn’t apply to her. When they both realized [it was not going to work out for them], they never got over that.”

And then, of course, there were the women. Many say that the way Demi handled her husband’s supposed hookup with Brittney epitomizes fear. “She forgave him immediately — she even blamed herself for it!” says the source.
Now those around Demi (including her three daughters, reportedly) say they’ve lost faith in Ashton and want Demi to move on. And she may finally be on the same page.
As for Ashton, says the source, “He really seems to be only thinking of himself.”
