Rooney had to fight very hard to get her role in the film and prove to David Fincher she was worthy.

“It was like, ‘Come in. We need you to do this, we need you to do that.’ That’s all I thought about and all I did for weeks,” Rooney explains to Vogue magazine of the audition process for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

David even once told her, “Go out and get really, really drunk and come in the next morning so we can take pictures of you,” with the goal of having Rooney look strung out.

“And I did it!” she says. “Threw up all night!”

And she had to continue with that attitude to keep the role.

And she had to continue with that attitude to keep the role. Rooney posed nude for a movie poster (complete with pierced nipple and all), but she didn’t seem to mind that.

“There’s a certain way people are used to seeing nude women, and that’s in a submissive, coy pose, not looking at the camera,” Mara says. “And in this poster, I’m looking dead into the camera with no expression on my face. I think it freaks a lot of people out.”

And during her interview with Vogue at a restaurant, David told Mara quietly, “You can eat.”

“You can have lettuce and a grape. A raisin if you must,” he laughed.

Rooney’s character is described as “a pale, anorexic young woman who has hair as short as a fuse” but when Rooney was asked if she had to get unhealthily skinny for the role she said, “Umm… not really.”

“It hasn’t been too hard for her,” David added.

“One of the things that make our version that much more heartbreaking,” Mara said, “is that even though I am playing a 24-year-old, I look much younger. I look like a child.”
