Celebrities using the word “Nazi” never seems to end well, and it looks like Susan Sarandon may have to learn that the hard way. The actress is under fire for comments she recently made regarding Pope Benedict XVI.

According to Newsday, Susan was being interviewed with fellow actor Bob Balaban in the Hamptons on Saturday. The actress mentioned that she sent the pope a copy of Sister Helen Prejean’s Dead Men Walking, which inspired the film she won an Oscar for.
She clarified the comment by saying, “The last [pope],” referring to Pope John Paul II, “not this Nazi one we have now.”

Well, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, Bill Donohue, already issued a response to Susan’s comments. He tells E! News, “She’s a despicable person to make these kinds of despicable remarks.”
“He deserted the Hitler Youth at the first moment,” Donohue added. “[Sarandon] doesn’t know what she’s talking about…to blame him for something that he was never responsible for; he was forced to join as every boy his age was. Unlike the others, he deserted.”
