The Avengers Cinematographer Uses iPhone to Shoot Several Scenes

The Avengers filmed shots on an iPhone

The Avengers is currently in post-production, with a release date set for May 4, 2012. Even though this is a big-budget ensemble, some scenes were shot in an unconventional way, using an iPhone 4. Take a look at what director of photography Seamus McGarvey had to say about using the iPhone for several shots seen in The Avengers, some of which actually made it into the trailer.

“The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.”

The cinematographer didn’t reveal which shots were crafted using the smart phone, but it doesn’t seem like there is any difference in quality throughout the trailer.

We reported in January that director Chan-wook Park shot an entire film on the iPhone 4, entitled Paranmanjang. It seems this smart phone could be a vital tool for future filmmakers down the road.

The Avengers comes to theaters May 4th, 2012 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.
