According to Brad Pitt, mother doesn’t know best.
The 48-year-old actor has gone against his mom Jane‘s wishes and declared his support for President Barack Obama in the upcoming presidential elections, due to his firm stance on marriage equality.
“I am an Obama supporter and I’m backing his US election campaign,” Pitt said at a screening of his forthcoming film Killing Them Softly, at the Mayfair Hotel in London [via the Telegraph]. “Gay marriage is inevitable. The next generation, they get it. It is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality.”
However, this isn’t the first time Pitt has opened up about his fight for gay rights.
The Fight Club actor and his fiancee, Angelina Jolie, famously declared that they would not marry until “everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able.”
However, their views were subsequently slammed by Pitt’s own mother when she penned an open anti-Obama, anti-gay letter in Missouri newspaper Springfield News-Leader.
“Any Christian who does not vote or writes in a name is casting a vote for Romney’s opponent, Barack Hussein Obama,” Jane wrote, adding that Obama is “a man who sat in Jeremiah Wright’s church for years, did not hold a public ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, and is a liberal who supports the killing of unborn babies and same-sex marriage.”
“Any Christian should spend much time in prayer before refusing to vote for a family man with high morals, business experience, who is against abortion, and shares Christian conviction concerning homosexuality just because he is a Mormon,” she continued.
Pitt’s brother Doug defended their mother’s opinion during a Today interview in July, telling the talk show host, “There can be healthy discussion when people disagree with you, and I think there should be. The bad thing is when it turns into venom and negativity and we don’t have that in our family. It’s open discussion, we can learn from each other … maybe you learn something.”
