The sassy and fashionable The Voice contestant De’Borah says she basically came out for the first time last night.
“That is absolutely correct,” she said when asked on a press call Tuesday if this was her first time coming out as gay. “I never ever mentioned those words like ‘I’m gay.’ I’ve never said that before. It didn’t even freak me out like ‘Whoa, I can’t believe I just said that.’”
On Monday’s premiere episode of the singing competition’s third season, the Chicago native blasted out Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” shortly after her introduction piece which included her saying comments such as, “BOOM. I’m gay. How about it?” and telling the audience she’d been rejected by her church because of her boyish looks.
So did her parents know she was gay?
“They knew, but I’ve never actually uttered the words. It was more of an assumption.”
De’Borah chose to be a part of Christina Aguilera’s team after revealing that her coach’s song, “The Voice Within” is one of her all-time favorite songs.
“When I saw her, I died inside,” the 25-year-old said upon seeing Aguilera’s chair turned. “The one song I love the most is what got me here. […] I’m so amazed. I can’t even talk.”
The second night of The Voice‘s blind auditions airs Tuesday at 8 PM on NBC.
