Jessica Simpson Criticized for Taking Photos of Baby Maxwell in a Bikini

What could be so harmful about an oh-so-cute baby bikini?

A lot, according to child-welfare advocates, who are slamming Jessica Simpson after the she revealed a photo of her four-month-old daughter, Maxwell, in a two-piece during on Katie.

During her appearance on Katie Couric‘s new talker Monday, Simpson — who debuted her slimmer post-baby shape in an all-black, Roland Mouret peplum dress — opened up about joys of motherhood, calling it “a dream” and “absolutely amazing.”

The singer-turned-fashion-designer proudly gave viewers a peek at her growing baby girl in her very first bikini — a mustard-colored, crocheted two-piece.

But the photo has proved to be quite controversial.

Simpson – who is engaged to fiance Eric Johnson – has come under fire for dressing her daughter in what some deem an inappropriate bathing suit.

“It is very disturbing to see a young baby presented to the world wearing a bikini,” said Claude Knight (via The Daily Mail), director of charity Kidscape. “Celebrity choices carry great influence, as can be seen by the manner in which their accessories and manners are copied widely.”

“It is hoped that parents will understand that ‘baby bikinis’ are totally inappropriate and that they contribute to the sexualization and commercialization of childhood,” he continued. “We should not be compromising the sanctity of our children’s early years.”

And on Twitter, detractors took aim at Simpson, whose rep did not return Celebuzz‘s request for comment. “Jessica Simpson posts a photo of her 4-month-old baby in a BIKINI – wrong wrong wrong,” wrote one crtiic.

Another added, “A baby in a bikini?! Dear God, some people are just wrong!”
