The world Shonda Rhimes has built on ABC’s Scandal is full of secrets. Actually, we think it would be safe to say that there isn’t one character in this Washington, D.C. that isn’t hiding something from someone.
While Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and her team fix fallouts from other people’s secrets being revealed, they may not realize that their leader may have the most secrets of them all. When we caught up with Washington on Tuesday at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, she told us that’s one of the things she loves about the show.
“At the end of the very first episode of the very first season you realize that Olivia’s not who she seems,” the actress said. “She doesn’t believe in crying but then she’s crying alone in the coat closet. But, I think as the season goes on you realize everybody’s got secrets.”
Teasing us she continues, “And Season 2 is a lot about how those secrets complicate each other’s lives.”
Note: Spoilers ahead on the shocking storylines to come in the second season of Scandal.
Last season’s finale left us with a pregnant Mellie (Bellamy Young) and the burning question of ”Who is Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes)?”
So just who is she?
In the drama’s season premiere, we get the answer. Not only do we learn Quinn’s real name, but we also find out some information about her checkered past. Highly scandalous information, of course.
At the end of the episode (which we’ve seen and LOVED!), a major twist is revealed regarding Quinn, Olivia and Huck (Guillermo Diaz) that may plot part of the course for the entire season.
“I was screaming when I got that script because I was like I need more information but that’s how our show works,” explains Washington. “We answer the question ‘Who is Quinn?’ and then we give you six more questions to walk away with.”
As for Olivia’s biggest secret – at least from her peers at Pope & Associates – she says she really has no idea what will happen with her and Fitz’s (Tony Goldwyn) relationship.
All she was willing to reveal to us, “I can tell you that it’s a complicated relationship and they’re both trying to do the right thing.”

The second season of Scandal premieres Thursday, Sept. 27 at 10 PM.
