Just two days after Billie Joe Armstrong‘s onstage meltdown, Green Day announced the famed frontman is getting treatment for substance abuse – but the news has come as a shock to those closest to him.
“He was fine yesterday (on Saturday),” his aunt Judith Armstrong told Celebuzz.
“We were on an airplane together and he was fine.”
What else did the rocker’s family have to say?
The 40-year-old went off on a bizarre rant on Friday during the band’s performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas.
When the band members were given a one-minute warning to wrap their set, Armstrong lost it and screamed, “You’re f–king kidding me. What the f–k! I’m not f–king Justin Bieber, you motherf–kers . . I got one minute, one minute left.”
The band issued a statement on their official Facebook page on Sunday: “Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”
Even after all the reports, his family was still taken aback by the news.
“He was as normal as you and I talking,” said Armstrong. “So I don’t know what is going on.”
“I talked to him yesterday and he was fine.”
This comes just two weeks after Billie Joe was hospitalized while on tour in Italy, with the rocker’s mother Ollie Armstrong revealing to Celebuzz “he picked up a bug or it was food poisoning”, which forced the musicians to cancel their performance and apologize once again to their fans.
Billie Joe is married to Adrienne Nesser Armstrong and the couple have two children — Joseph, 17, and Jakob, 14.
His wife’s family offered their love and support during this difficult time.
“He’s a great guy and we love him very much,” said a member of the Nesser family when reached for comment.
