‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Kevin McKidd Talks Directing ‘Some Pretty Far-Out Comedic Storylines’

Kevin McKidd will be back in the director’s chair on Season 9 of Grey’s Anatomy.

The star, who plays chief of surgery, Owen Hunt, on ABC’s hit medical drama has previously directed three episodes of the show and will once again be pulling double duty for a new lighthearted episode.

McKidd told Celebuzz on Monday that he had just handed his cut of Season 9’s Episode 4, “I Saw Her Standing There,” a week-and-a-half ago and is hoping to get to step behind the camera again later in the season.

“I got given a kind of pretty light fun, one of those kind of light episodes of Grey’s,” said McKidd, 39. “It was fun for me because I usually do the more dramatic stuff so it was really fun to do some pretty far-out comedic storylines.”

What else did the star have to say about the episode?

The Scottish actor said, “I think we need that after the first three episodes. They’ll need kind of a break and a little bit of a light release and that’s what my episode does do quite well hopefully.”

Of course, the first three episodes of Grey’s Anatomy’s ninth season will be dealing with the repercussions of the tragic plane crash, which took place at the end of last season and killed Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh). With the first episode picking up a few months after the crash, and a flashback to the immediate revelation of the tragedy in Episode 2, we are stocking up on our tissues.

With music heightening the emotion on any and every episode of Grey’s, we were also wondering how much McKidd actually gets to contribute to picking the songs when he is sitting in the director’s chair.

He told us that while the amazing music department usually has some tracks laid down by the time he gets to the edit room, “there has been a couple of episodes where I have laid in and changed some songs here and there.” McKidd added that he actually changed the first song on his episode this season in order to get the right tone.

Guest star Debbie Allen will be reprising her role as Catherine Avery in McKidd’s directorial turn, according to TV Guide. The actress will also be taking her turn behind the camera in the season’s third episode.

When we last saw Jackson’s (Jesse Williams) mother she was having a fling with Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.). Could the McKidd lighthearted episode have to do with her coming back for Round 2 with the former chief of surgery?

We’ll have to wait and see.

The ninth season of Grey’s Anatomy premieres Thursday at 9 PM on ABC.
