With her controversial semi-nude snaps still circulating, Kate Middleton is staying out the public spotlight.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge skipped out on her lifelong friend’s weekend this weekend in her hometown of Bucklebury, Berkshire. But sister Pippa Middleton — with parents Carole and Michael in tow — was on hand Saturday to celebrate bride Mary Bucknell — whose relationship with the Duchess dates back two decades — as she said “I do” to Royal Marines Captain Simon Cox.
The royal couple’s presence was expected, especially given Bucknell and Cox were guests at the Duke and Duchess’ 2011 watched-by-the-world nuptials.
But since returning to the U.K. following their nine-day Diamond Jubilee tour, Prince William and his wife have been lying low.
The Duke and Duchess have gone underground after topless photos of Middleton sunbathing while on vacation at a private chateau in the south of France leaked.
The royal legal team has taken aim at both the publications and the unidentified paparazzi, after what St. James’s Palace called a “grotesque” and “totally unjustifiable” invasion of Middleton’s privacy. And last Tuesday, the royal couple won their first legal victory when a French court ruled that Closer — the first outlet to print the topless photos — was prohibited from any further dissemination of the images of the Duchess.
But the Duke and Duchess’ legal proceedings may be in vain. Despite their efforts to prevent further publication, the snaps have appeared in France, Italy, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark and on the Internet — but not in the U.K.
Though the couple got an injunction against Closer, nothing is preventing the photographer — who is British and is thought to own the copyright to the controversial images — from continuing to cash in on the photos.
