In Hollywood, the pressure to be thin can be overwhelming — but now, celebrities are fighting back.
After being scrutinized for her fuller figure in recent weeks, Lady Gaga posted photos of herself in her underwear on her website in an effort to start what she’s calling a “body revolution.” Gaga also revealed that she has suffered from bulimia and anorexia since she was just 15.
“I would say the root cause is the media influence we have, to be beautiful and to be thin at all costs,” doctor Sara Gottfried told The Daily Buzz.
But Gaga’s not the only star revealing her dangerous battle with an eating disorder.
Last week, Katie Couric opened up about her struggles to stay thin on her daytime talk show, Katie. ”I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that,” Couric admitted.
“I think this is a glorious message,” said Gottfried. “I applaud Katie.”
Meanwhile, Couric’s guest Demi Lovato started facing the problem at much younger age. “I remember being three years old in a diaper and rubbing my hand over my stomach … and I remember thinking in my head, ‘I wonder if one day this will ever be flat?’,” she revealed.
According to nutritionist Haylie Pomroy, the singer’s shocking admission isn’t uncommon among young girls. ”I think it’s important that we talk to our little girls and tell them how amazing [food is] and the power of food,” she told The Daily Buzz.
“How it can make you jump higher and be stronger and all of the wonderful things about it, instead of focusing on it as being a bad thing.”
