The talent on this cycle of NBC’s The Voice is phenomenal and as the Top 20 was cut down to 12 on Thursday, some exceptional singers moved on to the next round of competition.
Trevin Hunte has no doubt been one of the frontrunners in the competition since the very beginning. So what’s his plan as he makes his way through the live playoffs?
“My strategy is just to do what I’ve been doing in the past. Stepping on the stage and performing like it’s my last time,” the 18-year-old told Celebuzz at a celebration for the Top 12 at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. “I just want to leave my heart on the stage so my fans can see it and the people who are watching can see the emotion and the passion I have.”
Going into Thursday’s elimination, the Team Cee Lo singer says he was feeling confident about making it through but began to get nervous when some of his closest friends in the competition on the other teams were sent home.
Though the feedback after Hunte’s performance on Wednesday was overwhelmingly positive and coupled with a standing ovation, Christina Aguilera had mentioned she’d like to see Cee Lo get into the young singer’s untapped potential and push him harder.
And Hunte tells us he is ready for that.
“I have the best coach in the world. I have the best coach I could ever ask for, so I’m definitely ready for a push. I’m ready to take a challenge,” he reveals.
Adding, “I don’t want people to put in a box to sing a strong ballad. I want to be able to sing country. I want to be able to also do some pop. I know people may not gravitate to that but I want to show people that I can be versatile.”
As for that infamous eighth grade teacher who told him he wasn’t good enough, the Queens, N.Y. native says he’s above that now.
“I feel like I’ve proven myself not only to her but I’ve proven myself to America and to all those people that judge me,” says Hunte. “I don’t have time for that. I actually want to thank her for pushing me to audition for the show. It’s the best feeling in the world.”
The Voice live playoffs continue Monday and Tuesday at 8 PM ET/ tape delayed PT on NBC.
