Just days after their split hit headlines, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez took New York City by storm — separately.
On the heels of his Boston show over the weekend, Bieber rocked Brooklyn’s newly christened Barclays Center on Monday night as part of his worldwide Believe tour. “THANK YOU BROOKLYN!!” Bieber tweeted following the concert, a portion of the profits from which the singer will donate to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. “Great show tonight.”
Bieber had a few big-name stars cheering him on — hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, who had a hand in bringing the Nets NBA franchise to Brooklyn, was in the house. “much love to the man who owns the building for coming thru.. @JayZ …much respect,” Bieber tweeted. “meant alot to have the man himself come show love tonight,” he later added. “thanks @JayZ …happy to be in Brooklyn today,” where Biebes received a limited-edition Jay-Z Nets jersey, autographed by the team.
And One Direction’s Liam Payne and Niall Horan also showed support for the newly single Biebs. “Went to watch my boy @justinbieber tonight!” Horan tweeted. “Smashed it! Great job dude! See ya soon.” The “Boyfriend” singer thanked the pop stars, tweeting: “@NiallOfficial @Real_Liam_Payne good seeing you fellas.”
Meanwhile in Manhattan, Gomez was the star of Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards. At the Carnegie Hall ceremony Monday night, Gomez — stunning in a winter white Giambattista Valli dress — accepted the Independent Spirit award for her illustrative work in TV, film, fashion and music, as well as her service as a UNICEF ambassador.
“I am so honored to be in a room full of women that I can only aspire to be as good as they are one day,” Gomez said in her acceptance speech. “I feel so lucky that every day I get to work with interesting people that are way smarter than me, and have taught me so much…. I just want to share to all the girls out there that you have a voice, that you have a chance to do what you love…. Just be true to who you are.”
Following the star-studded event — which also paid tribute to Girls creator Lena Dunham and famed photographer Annie Leibovitz — Gomez tweeted her place card on the table, writing, “Speechless… So many powerful women here tonight. So inspired.”
After also reflecting on his evening, Bieber struck a sentimental note on Twitter, sharing a bit of advice he acquired from “a stranger [he] just met”: “‘Life is short. It’s gonna be what it’s gonna be. As long as u put your best foot forward,” Bieber tweeted to his 30 million followers.
