SALT LAKE CITY — Former child star Gary Coleman died Friday after suffering a brain hemorrhage earlier this week at his Utah home. He was 42.
Coleman was declared dead at 12:05 p.m. at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, a spokesperson for the Provo facility confirmed to the Salt Lake Tribune.
"Family members and close friends were at his side when life support was terminated," spokeswoman Janet Frank told the paper.
The actor was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after he fell and injured himself at his home in Santaquin, located 55 miles south of Salt Lake City. Coleman was conscious and lucid until midday Thursday, when his condition worsened and doctors placed him on life support.
"At this critical moment, we can only ask for your thoughts and prayers for Gary to make a speedy and full recovery," his family said in a statement earlier today.
Coleman has had a string of legal and health woes over the years. In February, he suffered a seizure on the set of The Insider, one month after being hospitalized for a never disclosed reason. He also underwent heart surgery last fall and has endured at least two kidney transplants over the years.
In their statement, Coleman’s family admitted the actor has had "difficulties not only with health issues, but also with his personal and public life."
"At times it may not have been apparent, but he always had fond memories of being an entertainer and appreciates his fans for all their support over the years," his family said.
Coleman, who rose to fame as Arnold Jackson on TV’s Diff’rent Strokes, has been living in Utah since 2005. He married his wife, Shannon Price, in 2007.
