‘Couples Retreat’ Tops Weekend Box Office

Couples RetreatHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau came out “swinging” as their new movie “Couples Retreat” debuted with $35.3 million in ticket sales to claim the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The Universal Pictures film easily outdistanced Woody Harrelson’s “Zombieland,” which finished second at $15 million.

The week’s biggest buzz, however, belonged to Paramount’s “Paranormal Activity,” which shot into the top ten at No. 5. The horror flick, which is directed by Oren Peli, brought back memories of the “Blair Witch Project” as it was produced on a meager budget of $16,000 while being entirely shot with a handheld camera.
