‘Paranormal Activity’ Becomes Low-Budget Horror Hit

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — “Paranormal Activity” appears poised to become the box office marketing story of the year.

The horror film, which is directed by Oren Peli, is bringing back memories of the “Blair Witch Project” after it finished fourth over the weekend at the box office. Like “Blair Witch” exactly a decade ago, “Paranormal Activity” was produced on a meager budget (reportedly $15,000) while being shot entirely with a handheld camera.

The film actually debuted on Sept. 25 by playing only in midnight showings in college towns, but demand led to a nationwide release by Paramount Pictures over the weekend.

The sleeper hit revolves around a young middle class couple, Katie (Katie Featherstone) and Micah (Micah Sloat), who become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic after moving into a suburban San Diego home (Peli’s actual residence).
