HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — David Lane, the attorney for the Colorado couple accused of claiming their 6-year-old son had floated off Thursday in a flying saucer-like helium balloon, says he has yet to see any evidence from authorities supporting the alleged hoax.
“We’re left in the dark in terms of what they sheriff’s department claims they’ve got,” Lane told Matt Lauer on Monday’s Today Show.
On Sunday, Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden announced that Richard and Mayumi Heene were under investigation for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, attempt to influence a public official and providing false information to authorities. They face up to six years in prison and a fine of as much as $500,000 on each of two felony counts, although no charges have been filed yet.
Lane said the Heenes are “absolutely” innocent, but were willing to voluntarily turn themselves in to face charges. He noted that he wishes to avoid “the public spectacle and humiliation” of police arresting them in the presence of their children.
