HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Brittany Murphy’s husband, Simon Monjack, is speaking out for the first time after his wife died unexpectedly Sunday at age 32.
“My world was destroyed yesterday,” the British filmmaker, who married Murphy in 2007, told Access Hollywood on Monday.
Monjack said his Sunday morning began as “a regular day,” only to quickly fell apart when Murphy’s mother, Sharon, found her daughter unresponsive in the bathroom of the couple’s home in the Hollywood Hills.
“Sharon went into the bathroom because she had been in there a long time. Her mom screamed for me and I ran. Then called 911” he revealed.
Monjack said Murphy had been to the doctor recently, but he downplayed the severity of the flu-like symptoms she was suffering from in the days leading up to her death.
“She had laryngitis,” he said. “She had been tired at the end of the year. She had made a couple movies.”
The Factory Girl writer also slammed tabloid reports suggesting that his wife’s death may have been due to his influence over her.
“I don’t know why anyone would think that,” he said. “She found love. We found love. Brittany didn’t get to where Brittany was with anyone controlling her… Brittany was Brittany.”
Shortly after Murphy’s death was first announced, Ashton Kutcher wrote on Twitter: “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine … see you on the other side kid.” Monjack told Access that he was touched by the message, even though he doesn’t know her ex-boyfriend personally.
“I loved what Ashton wrote,” he said. “It was comforting to me…I couldn’t have said it better.”
