Ellen DeGeneres ‘Saddened’ By California Gay Marriage Ban

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Ellen DeGeneres is speaking out on the passing of California Proposition 8 in Tuesday’s election, which now bans same-sex marriages in the state.

DeGeneres, who in August married her longtime girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi, said the news is a major disappointment.

“This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had,” the 50-year-old DeGeneres wrote in a message posted Thursday on her talk-show’s Web site. “I was saddened beyond belief.”

DeGeneres said the news was particularly difficult considering the steps the country had taken on Tuesday by electing Barack Obama as the first African-American president.

“Here we just had a giant step toward equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away,” she wrote.

While disappointed with the Proposition 8 results, DeGeneres vowed to continue her fight for equality.

“I believe one day a ‘ban on gay marriage’ will sound totally ridiculous,” she added. “In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us.”
