MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The victory by the underdog New Orleans Saints wasn’t the biggest shocker on Super Bowl Sunday — it was Jay Leno and David Letterman sharing a couch together.
One of the most popular commercials during the Super Bowl XLIV broadcast was a promo for CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. The 15-second spot featured Leno and Letterman at a Super Bowl party with Oprah Winfrey sandwiched between the sparring late-night hosts.
“This is the worst Super Bowl party ever,” Letterman says.
“Now, Dave, be nice,” Oprah replies.
Then Leno chimes in saying, “Aw, he’s just saying that because I’m here.”
According to USA Today, the spot was conceived two weeks ago and shot last Tuesday at Letterman’s Manhattan studio.
“This was Dave’s idea,” said Late Show executive producer Rob Burnett. “He wrote the script, then we called Oprah, who thankfully had a good enough time doing it the last time. She was in right away.”
For the super-secret promo shoot, Leno snuck into Letterman’s studio wearing a fake mustache, sunglasses and a hooded sweatshirt. Burnett said the embattled NBC host was “very professional, very cordial, friendly.”
“Jay got it,” he told the paper. “He thought it was really funny and said ‘Let’s do it.’ “
