‘Shutter Island’ Tops Weekend Box Office

Shutter IslandHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Shutter Island turned out to be a scary place for the competition.

The creepy thriller set at a remote insane asylum had a $40.2 million debut to win the weekend box office, according to box office estimates released Sunday. The total marked the best opening for the Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio tandem in what is their fourth collaboration.

The star-studded Garry Marshall ensemble Valentine’s Day slipped to No. 2 with ticket sales of $17.2 million after topping the box office last weekend.

Avatar ($16.1 million), Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief ($15.3 million) and The Wolfman ($9.8 million) rounded out the top five weekend films, respectively.
