‘Alice in Wonderland’ Remains No. 1 at Weekend Box Office

Alice in WonderlandHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Tim Burton’s fantasy adventure Alice in Wonderland extended its stay atop the box office with weekend sales of $62 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The Walt Disney Studios film, starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, easily outdistanced Matt Damon’s war thriller Green Zone, which debuted at No. 2 with $14.5 million.

In its second week, Alice in Wonderland raised its domestic total to $208.6 million to become the top-grossing of Burton and Depp’s seven films together, a distinction previously held by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

She’s Out of My League, a romantic comedy starring Jay Baruchel and newcomer Alice Eve, debuted at No. 3 with $9.6 million. Following close behind was the Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin romantic drama Remember Me, which finished fourth in its opening weekend at $8.3 million.

The Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio thriller Shutter Island finished fifth with $8.1 million.
