Coco Rocha’s BaubleBar Collection: ‘I Don’t Think Fashionable Jewelry Should Cost as Much as a Down Payment on a House!’

Coco Rocha is one of the biggest models in the world for a reason: She knows how to wear the heck out of clothes. And all that time spent in front of the camera and on the runway has taught her a thing or two about what she loves and what works for women. Now she’s putting those lessons to work with a very chic (and very statement-making) collection for editor-loved, affordable jewelry line BaubleBar — and chatting with PEOPLE about favorite pieces, inspiration and more.

“As a model I get to play dress up with some of the world’s most amazing creations. I’ve worn everything from corset-ed Renaissance dresses to 3D printed futuristic couture,” she tells PEOPLE. “Having that kind of a hands-on education has definitely helped me hone in on what I like and don’t like and also what works, what fits and what feels great on.”

But despite the fact that she’s paid to model priceless creations, she’s not one for over-the-top expensive accessories. “Even though I’m a high fashion model by trade, I’m from a middle class family and I don’t think fashionable jewelry should always cost as much as a down payment on a house!” she says. “When I met Daniella [Yacobovsky] and Amy [Jain], who are these incredibly smart and beautiful founders of the company, this concept of Baublebar really struck a chord with me and we knew from the first meeting that we wanted to partner up.”

Rocha designed her collection with the idea that it could all be worn every day, no black tie event necessary. “I’m a firm believer that you don’t have to be going to a gala to look glamorous. I really tried to design pieces that I would personally wear, both day and night — pieces that you can wear going to the office or the Oscars,” she says. “The collection is all conversation pieces, so you really don’t need an extravagant wardrobe to pair with it. That simple little black dress or the jeans and a t-shirt that every woman owns are the perfect counterpart to the collection.”

Among her favorite pieces? The ear cuffs (above, bottom right), which are featured prominently (“I think they’re a really unique and beautiful form of jewelry that are really picking up momentum. I’m obsessed with the look, especially with a high collar!”) and the statement necklaces, which she wears with “a button down shirt. It gives you a really fantastic high-meets-low edge which fits my personal style exactly.”
