Cannes has finally come to a close, and it’s been such a whirlwind of one beautiful gown after another. We narrowed down some of our favorite (and not-so-favorite) red carpet moments, but we also turned to a pro to narrow down the looks she was loving. Celeb stylist Kate Young (whose clients include Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams) answered that question for us — appropriately, since she’s also a style expert for Ask.com. Below, see her three top picks from the hundreds of red carpet looks we saw at the French Film Festival last week.

“Immediately following a red carpet event, we see a huge spike in searches on Ask.com around celebrities and their red carpet looks,” Young shares. “People want to know how they can take a trend and make it their own. Last year, we saw lots of questions like, ‘How can I make ruffles work for me?’ This wasn’t surprising given we saw ruffled tops and dresses everywhere. Making a trend your own is critical — if you love the look but feel like, say, ruffles will overwhelm you, search for a designer who offers a more conservative variation of that look. Fashion should be fun and not intimidating. At Cannes, the stars showed off hot red carpet trends that are surprisingly easy for any woman to incorporate into their wardrobe.”

Adele Exarchopoulos in Louis Vuitton at the premiere of Grace of Monaco: Adele’s stunning black and white dress is classic, gorgeous and sexy. Black and white will always be on trend, it’s a timeless combination that’s fashion foolproof. I tell women if they are stumped on what to wear for an event, start with the black and white basics, you can’t go wrong. The other reason why this dress works so well is that the fit is perfect. Never underestimate the power of a perfectly tailored dress, a simple dress can be turned into something magical with perfect tailoring.”

Sofia Coppola in Michael Kors at the premiers of Foxcatcher: Sofia is always chic and elegant on the red carpet. At this premiere, she wore a fabulous ’30s-inspired, navy and black, silver-studded and beaded dress. Ask.com users loved Sofia’s gown as well as Nicole Kidman’s and Cate Blanchett’s beaded gowns — we saw several spikes in searches for users looking for similar styles for less. Beading adds glamour to any occasion and isn’t only for the red carpet; mixing a favorite jean with a fun beaded top can complete a casual yet sexy and glamorous look.
Amelyne Valade in a custom Saint Lauren tuxedo at the premiere of Yves Saint Laurent: I love Amelyn’s look here Her fabulous custom Saint Laurent tuxedo is so on trend with this menswear inspired ensemble. Our users love the look of menswear, but want to know how they can still look feminine wearing it. Amelyne nails this look by wearing her hair down in loose tousled sexy waves and pairs it with gorgeous drop earrings to make the look feminine and extremely current. Women can easily incorporate this menswear look by taking simple pieces like a perfectly tailored blazer with a crisp button down shirt and then dress it up with bold jewelry or a sexy shoe. That helps them achieve the menswear look without feeling like they’re wearing their boyfriend’s suit.
