HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Christopher Plummer has joined the cast of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the upcoming Hollywood adaption based on the first book in Stieg Larsson’s best-selling series.
The 80-year-old actor will play Henrik Vanger, an ailing tycoon who hires discredited journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) to find his missing niece, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The film also stars Rooney Mara, who landed the coveted role of Lisbeth Salander, a mysterious computer hacker who teams with Craig’s character to solve the case.
Plummer is perhaps best known for his role as Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music. He also earned his only Oscar nomination for playing Leo Tolstoy opposite Helen Mirren in the 2009 drama "The Last Station."
Dragon Tattoo, which is already shooting in Sweden, is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2011. It is the first film in a three-part series that will also include The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.
