HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The animated super-villain comedy Megamind, featuring the voices of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill, had a $47.7 million debut to easily win the weekend box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The DreamWorks Animation picture outlasted the Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis road-trip comedy Due Date, which opened in second place at $33.5 million.
Coming in third was Tyler Perry’s drama For Colored Girls, which debuted at $20.1 million. The film is based on Ntozake Shange’s play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf.
Red ($8.9 million) and Saw 3D ($8.2 million) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the weekend top five.
