LONDON — Prince William and Kate Middleton have gotten engaged after a long courtship, setting up Britain’s biggest royal wedding since Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer almost 30 years ago.
The couple’s engagement was announced in a statement Tuesday.
"The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton," the statement began.
William and Middleton, both 28, became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya. The groom-to-be informed The Queen and other close members of his family, while also seeking permission from Middleton’s father.
While details are still being ironed out, it is known the wedding will take place next spring or summer in London. Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force.
The two have been dating off and on for eight years after meeting at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
