HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Disney’s animated musical Tangled knocked off Harry Potter to win the weekend box office with ticket sales of $21.5 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The film, in its second week of release, outlasted Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, which slipped to second place at $16.7 million. The seventh movie based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels had won the box office the previous two weekends.
The Christina Aguilera and Cher musical Burlesque finished in a tie for third place with the runaway train thriller Unstoppable. Both films earned $6.1 million over the weekend.
Love & Other Drugs, a comedy starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, came in fifth place at $5.7 million to round out the weekend top five.
