HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Roommate moved into the top spot at the weekend box office with a $15.6 million debut, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The psychological thriller, starring Leighton Meester as a psycho freshman who becomes obsessed with her new roomie (Minka Kelly), managed to outlast James Cameron’s 3-D adventure Sanctum, which premiered in second place with a weak $9.2 million.
Coming in third place at $8.4 million was the Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy No Strings Attached.
Oscar favorite The King’s Speech finished fourth with sales of $8.3 million, while The Green Hornet came in at No. 5 with sales of $6.1 million.
