Shailene Woodley’s ‘Ultra Feminine’ Teen Choice Awards Makeup: Get a Behind-the-Scenes Look!

Shailene Woodley was a huge winner at Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards — not just in terms of taking home surfboards (she took home five total for such varied categories as “Choice Movie Liplock” and “Choice Movie Actress: Drama”) but also in the style and beauty department. And now her beauty guru, celeb makeup artist Roxy, is sharing the secrets to Woodley’s sunny, glow-y makeup — as well as a sweet, exclusive behind-the-scenes shot from their pre-show time together.

“Shailene’s gorgeous gamine style was complemented to feminine perfection in the Peter Pilotto dress she wore,” Roxy tells PEOPLE. “The dress had a beautiful mid-’70s vibe, yet all its colors and patterns provided a modern twist. This meant keeping her makeup clean and not competitive with the dress was important.” Roxy decided to use bronzer and golden shadow to define Woodley’s features but avoided getting too bright or bold.

“We love a bold lip on Shailene, but being that this dress had so many beautiful colors and patterns on its design, we knew instantly to keep her look clean and sophisticated,” Roxy says. “We opted for a gorgeous muted plum-rose color (Tarte’s LipSurgence matte lip tint in “Hope”) that fit perfectly into her monochromatic color scheme but added a soft touch of feminine color to her lips.”

OBSESSED OR HOT MESS: The beauty edition!

Woodley’s hair fit the same mold: It was shiny and polished but very, very simple. “Hair came first for this event so Caile [Noble] could really work on the details of getting her hair slicked to perfection,” Roxy says. After Woodley’s mane was tamed, Roxy went in with Tarte’s airbrush foundation for coverage and added definition with the line’s “Park Avenue Princess” bronzer under the cheekbones at and the temples. Her eyes got the same bronzed, defined treatment with shades from the brand’s “Rainforest After Dark” cheek and eye palette and Roxy filled out her eyebrows with Tarte tinted brow gel in “Medium Brown.” Woodley applied her own mascara and the lip tint right out of the tube and she was ready to go.

As for any glad squad traditions the two share, Roxy says that Woodley relies on the most natural beautifier of all to prep for the red carpet: laughter. “A huge beauty ritual for us is a lot of laughing!” she says. “There is nothing more gorgeous than a woman who is relaxed and laughs a lot. So in addition to eating a very clean diet, staying healthy with exercise and using products that are good for our bodies and skin — we tend to make each other laugh a lot as a fun beauty staple [in our routine].”

The two also bond over their love of natural, cruelty-free beauty products, something Tarte is known for. “Shailene and I really value the integrity that Tarte puts into their products — we both get really excited to try new ones!” she says. “Shailene is a very health- and eco-conscious woman so its important that the brands and products she uses on her face and body are also just as conscious in those areas.”
