Contrary to speculation that one of Madonna’s new (and leaked) songs from her album Rebel Heart was about pop rival Lady Gaga, Madonna wants everyone to know that in fact, she is NOT anti-Gaga and denies any rumors of a feud.
She took to her Instagram to clear up the rumors, and her manager also took to Twitter to clarify that the song “Two Steps Behind” isn’t about Lady Gaga.
In response to a hack and her whole album of unfinished demos leaking, last week Madonna released six brand new songs in a holiday surprise. One song in particular, “Two Steps Behind”, had fans wondering if it was a diss track to Lady Gaga.
The track has lyrics like, “You’re a copycat, get back/I’m always on your mind”.
Lady Gaga’s song “Born This Way” had been heavily (and controversially) compared to Madonna classic “Express Yourself”, when Gaga released it in 2011.
Madonna reposted this pic of Lady Gaga to Instagram with the signature Rebel Heart face netting (a marketing meme for her new album):
Before then, she wrote on Instagram:
There are those who want to shut me up but they cannot! We still live in a world that discriminates against women. Their are People that are so hateful. they want to create feuds between strong women that do not exist! I do not wish ill will towards any other female artist and i never have! The World is big enough for all of us! I will fight for my rights as an artist, a human and a woman till the end of my days! Because i am a ❤️#rebelheart and i walk in the footsteps of giants and i will not apologize Or defend my unpublished, unfinished, STOLEN work. If you don’t like who i am or what I have to say then why are you reading this? #unapologeticbitch. P.S. Do not post hateful words about other people on my page either. If you are my fan speak no evil! #livingforlove
Gaga originally posted the pic on December 28th with the caption, “Careful witch, I’ll put a spell on you. Or maybe I already did.”
During a Twitter Q&A, Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, was asked about the fued:
@diamondflesh She has NO ill will towards gaga. It’s nonsense She was listening to the Tony Bennett duet album last week and appreciating it

@EDXCX that song is NOT about gaga or anyone in particular.
— Guy Oseary (@guyoseary) December 28, 2014
@EDXCX the song is an unfinished demo she had no intention of finishing or releasing along with many others..

@HolyGagaIoo it’s great that you support both artists. Why shouldn’t you?
— Guy Oseary (@guyoseary) December 28, 2014
@LadyDelCyrus and you do the same with gaga fans. Everyone should support one another. “Music, makes the people, come together”…

Madonna’s full Rebel Heart is slated for a March 2015 release.
