It’s no secret that Nicki Minaj and longtime beau Safaree Samuels had one messy breakup.
Amid rumors that the rapper has moved on with Meek Mill, Samuels has decided to go public and talk about why he “walked away” from his relationship with Minaj after 12 years. Explaining that “the respect was gone” in their romance, Samuels says he felt like he was “being treated like an employee instead of like her man” towards the end of their relationship.
“That was my soulmate,” Samuels adds of his ex. “Me and her were calling all the shots.”
Samuels explains that the only reason he decided to speak publicly about their past — and respond to her negative comments about him — is because he doesn’t appreciate how she has been recently discrediting him as an executive producer on their past projects.
“I never planned on talking about nothing,” he says. “But to publicly try to pull me down, that’s just when I’m like, ‘Yo, you getting ridiculous.’ I don’t try to publicly pull you down.”
Previously, Minaj slammed her former beau on Twitter for being an “ungrateful evil soul” and selling stories to the press. At the time of the breakup, the “Anaconda” hitmaker reportedly took a baseball bat to her ex’s car, which Samuels says did happen during the candid interview with Power 105.1′s The Breakfast Club. Samuels also confirms that he was devastated by the breakup and contemplated suicide momentarily.
Saying that he would still wish Minaj “nothing but the best,” Samuels also adds that he has no ill will towards the femcee should she announce that she’s dating again — even if she is rumored to be seeing a man he initially introduced her to.
“If that’s who she decides to move on with, it is what it is. I’m not mad. I’m not bitter,” he says of Mill. “If I wanted to make it work, I could’ve made it work.”
