What exactly does a modern-day, self-described feminist look like? An award-winning, media-dominating actress, or a chart-topping pop star who’s unafraid to speak up. In other words, Emma Watson, who spoke about gender equality at the United Nations over the past week, and Taylor Swift, who recently opened up about how pal Lena Dunham helped her understand that she’s always been a feminist – she just didn’t realize it.
Not all of these stars’ celebrity peers are so eager to call themselves feminists, though. Lady Gaga infamously said awhile back, “I’m not a feminist. I hail men; I love men,” as if loving men and advocating political, social, and economic equality for women were mutually exclusive. And more recently, “All About That Bass” singer Meghan Trainor said, “I don’t consider myself a feminist,” adding that her message to the word would be to “love yourself more.” Famous feminists do have some company, though, so read through for quotes from famous women who are proud feminists.
