Clay Aiken Loses Bid For Congress

Singer and American Idol season two runner-up Clay Aiken will not be adding member of Congress to his résumé this year. Last night Clay lost the Congressional race in North Carolina to the incumbent, Republican Renee Ellmers, who captured 56 percent of the district vote. The musician’s bid for Congress first caught national attention when he shared this emotional campaign video last February. Clay secured the Democratic primary in May. Clay, who is both gay and Southern Baptist, would have been the first openly gay member of Congress elected from the South. Sadly, it seems that though the American Idol alum has a strong following, his “Claymates” just weren’t enough to help him clinch the vote.
