Olivia Wilde: ‘Gift Giving Is One of My Love Languages’

We wish Olivia Wilde was part of our office holiday grab bag, because the star knows how to give a meaningful gift. Wilde’s charity Conscious Commerce (founded with her friend Barbara Burchfield to highlight stylish, ethically-made products) has partnered with another company we love: Birchbox! And it’s one box you’re definitely going to want to find under the tree this year.

“I really love buying things that have a story behind them,” Wilde told PEOPLE at the launch of the Conscious Commerce for Birchbox in N.Y.C. “That’s now what gives something value. I also think people like buying something they know is made in a certain place, by a certain type of artisan, and that’s a way to connect with the thing you’re buying — knowing where your dollars are going, who they’re supporting. Also, it’s a great conversation piece, so I am excited to give these boxes to friends and family because they’ll be able to carry that story on and say, ‘Listen, that hat was made in Northern Uganda, this necklace was made in Kenya.’ And it’s not just something from a store.”

The Conscious Commerce for Birchbox Limited Edition set retails for $68 and includes a variety of ethical products from an on-trend Live the Process gym clutch (yes, a gym clutch!), to Pura Vida bracelets to a Swell water bottle (an editor favorite!).

“We’re not talking about just stocking stuffers here,” Wilde said. “The great thing about Birchbox is that these are all individually great gifts, and we just put them together to add the story together.”

The actress also revealed that she’s not the type to rush her holiday shopping or get to stressed over it. Instead, she takes time to carefully plan her presents.

“Gift giving is one of my love languages,” she shared. “It gives me so much pleasure and so much more pleasure than receiving gifts. I think everyone understands that feeling. And holiday shopping is really stressful, and removes you from the whole point of the holiday, which is generosity and gratitude. So if you can incorporate giving back into your consumerism, then you’re going to feel a lot better about the whole stressful experience.”

Another one of Wilde’s favorite gifting tips: Try to think of things that can be recycled and passed on.

“We have a rule in my family which is you can’t give a book before you’ve read it,” she said. “You want to be able to say, ‘Listen, you’re going to love this book.’ You don’t want to say, ‘I heard it’s good.’ Thinking carefully about the person you’re getting the gift for is really fun.”

And while monogrammed presents are really popular this year, Wilde advises that it’s important to be mindful of how you personalize.

“The one thing about monogramming that I can’t get down with is that it’s hard to pass it on. I know it’s a big popular movement in baby stuff — since I now have a house full of baby stuff, and people are very sweet to have my son’s name monogrammed on a gift. Although it’s really lovely, it’s really hard to pass that on to someone else,” she explained. “In general I feel if we buy things with the intention that it will someday be someone else’s, it will slowly get us out of this wasteful pattern.”

And if you’re still on the personalizing bandwagon, the star suggests opting for some kind of phrase or design, adding, “Something that symbolizes the gesture you’re trying to make, but isn’t making it so specific that you can’t give it away.”

What do you think of the star’s gift-giving MO? Are you excited about the new Birchbox collaboration? Sound off below.
