Bella Thorne on Getting Crazy With Her Hair: ‘Sometimes, You Just Need to Be a Little Uncomfortable’

At 17, Bella Thorne may be a relative red carpet newbie, but she’s already achieved pro status in the “enviable hair” category. We caught up with the actress, new author and Candie’s spokeswoman to get the scoop on how she does it (as it turns out: Lots of cuts to keep it healthy and turning down any attempts to tease it). But, she tells PEOPLE, there are styles that even the queen of bold hair is hesitant about.

Case in point: the braided updo she wore to Jeremy Scott. “Crazy hairdo! They were like, ‘This is the time to be funky, OK? Because no one will judge you.’ And [hairstylist] Castillo whipped it up — amazing,” she tells PEOPLE. “He was like, ‘Let me just try the cornrows and this and the braid.’ I looked at my hair and was like, ‘Hmm. OK, it’s really … That’s my face. That’s my whole face. But OK, let’s try it.’ Sometimes you just need to be a little uncomfortable.”

In her everyday life, though, she prefers to dress “normal,” in black jeans, a white tee and Converse, or in a cozy piece like the Candie’s sweaterdress she named as her favorite piece at an event for the line’s holiday collection at N.Y.C.’s Tender Lounge. “I just wore it with fishnets, boots and with a leather jacket — it’s very, very comfortable.”

So where does she get the inspiration for her “clean, versatile and interesting” red carpet style? Stylist Johnny Wujek, the man behind Katy Perry and Kate Mara’s memorable looks (and her date for her first time at Milan Fashion Week). “I had never been to Italy before, and I’ve always wanted to go because I’m Italian, so I got to try the pasta and everything I’ve been talking about for so long,” she shared. “I’ve never spent that much time with Johnny before, and he is a ball of energy,” she shared. “Every night, he’s like, ‘Let’s go out! Let’s go out!’ And I’m like, ‘Johnny, I’m exhausted. How are you still up?’”

In between her photoshoots, roles and trips to Italy, the star has a new gig to add to her resume: author of the young adult novel Autumn Falls. “It wasn’t that I just wanted to be an author because it was always a dream of mine, but it was mostly that I wanted to teach kids that if I’m dyslexic and can write a book series with one of the biggest publishing companies, you can do whatever you want, because I’m no different than you,” she tells PEOPLE. Being told that I’d never be able to be an actress because I couldn’t read and everything else that goes along with it … was hard, and I put that in book. There’s a lot of myself in the book, in Autumn, but of course, she’s very different from me.”
