Emmy Rossum is known for her always-trendy street style. (Need proof? See here, here and here.) So when we had the opportunity to chat with the Shameless actress at a recent Motorola event (she’s also brand ambassador for the tech company), the first thing we asked her was the secret behind her spot-on styling.

You’d think with her jam-packed schedule, Rossum would prefer sweats over perfectly-put-together outfits when she’s not in front of a camera, but that’s not the case.
“[My style] is often based on my mood, and I always wear things that are comfortable for every day,” she told PEOPLE. “I always like to look put together and smart, but I don’t put too much energy into it. Sometimes I pick out outfits on the weekend that I might wear during the week, or before a season comes, I’ll kind of group things together in the closet that might go together — more like an organization tactic so outfits can come together much more quickly in the mornings.”
One piece from Rossum’s closet that she’s currently loving more than others: a versatile pair of pants. “Right now I’m wearing a black capri pant by company called Bardot, and it’s a very smart, simple lightweight black pant that can transition with layers into a winter look,” she shared. “But I like [the pants] with a ballet flat and a turtleneck. It feels very European, easy and elegant.”

Since her closet is already well stocked, the star isn’t adding any clothing items to her holiday wish list this year. Instead, she’s asking for “a cure for ALS, and I would love one of those 3-D televisions,” she said.
And as for what she plans on getting for her friends and family, Rossum is all about personalization. “I like to do things that are super personalized, and they don’t have to be very expensive,” she explained. “So on the super inexpensive end, you can do a candle that has their initial on it, or I love to shop on Etsy for Christmas presents as well.”
