Cameron Diaz is one of those actresses that can make laid-back California girl style work on the red carpet: She has no qualms showing up to an event in a beige sweater, leather leggings and a totally effortless loose side braid. But she can also pull out a stellar sexy LBD or a head-turning bold gown. So when she stepped out at the New York City premiere of Annie in a slightly-shimmery Dior dress and a makeup look that embodies both casual-cool and elegant glamour, we wanted to know how she made it work.

Makeup artist Robin Fredriksz for Marc Jacobs Beauty wanted to channel the holiday vibe of Annie, in which Diaz plays Miss Hannigan, a character with sloppy morals and an equally sloppy sense of style. Diaz herself prefers a much more strealimed look: “Cameron pretty much likes to have a a pop of color and keep it pretty natural everywhere else,” Fredriksz tells PEOPLE. “Because it was a daytime premiere, and because of her dress we decided not to do a strong eye and nude lip, but to do the opposite. It feels more wintery and holiday to have the pop in the lip.”

Fredriksz opted for Marc Jacobs Beauty Kiss Pop Color Stick in Headliner, a “berry sangria” that in some lights resembles a lighter version of Pantone’s Color of the Year, Marsala.
“This lip color is like a big fat crayon,” she says. “Personally I don’t like a perfectly painted or drawn lip, it becomes hard. This one gives you a soft edge.” The look is easy to achieve because the stick does double duty as a blush. “If it works on the lip, it works on the cheek, and it brings the whole story together. So dab a little on your cheeks after you put it on your lip!”
She also praised the long-lasting quality of the shade. “The formula looks and feels like velvet,” she says. “We started the day doing Japanese press and knew we weren’t going to have a lot of time between that and the premiere.” But after 45 minutes of interviews, “her makeup hadn’t moved! We literally had ten minutes to get her ready, and I didn’t need to do anything. I was like, ‘Here’s your lipstick, put it in your bag!’”

As if you didn’t notice, Diaz’s bright blue eyes don’t require a ton of makeup to stand out. So, Fredriksz used “a beautiful brown gel pencil called Brown Out which has a little shimmer to it.” But like the lip color, the look achieved with the pencil wasn’t only a liner.
“I used a pretty thick line on the top of her lid and blended it out with the brush to give it a shadow-like feel. This is foolproof makeup because if you put it on and you’re kind of messy with it, you can always feather it out with your brush!”
She used the nudes and the gold shimmer from the “natural” Dreamer Style Eye-Con palette, and added the darker brown from the set into the crease in her eye. A swipe of the line’s Blaquer liquid liner and a coat of mascara finished it off.
