Jaws dropped when Nicki Minaj seemingly stumped for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in a newly released record last week. “I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney/You lazy bitches is f***ing up the economy,” she rapped in her verse on Lil Wayne’s latest mixtape, Dedication 4.
But despite her shocking Romney shout-out, President Barack Obama doesn’t seem concerned about what decision the hip-hop empress will make come November.
“I’m not sure that’s actually what happened,” Obama told Orlando radio station Power 953 when asked if he’d heard that Minaj might swing right in the election. “I think she had a song on there, a little rap that said that, but she likes to play different characters. So I don’t know what’s going on there.”
Now Minaj is praising the Commander in Chief for his insight into her eccentric lyricism.
“Ha! Thank you for understanding my creative humor & sarcasm Mr. President, the smart ones always do… *sends love & support*” Minaj tweeted.
And the singer-rapper celebrated more than just Obama’s savvy. “Awesome!” she wrote. “Now I can tell my grandchildren that the 1st black President of the United States took the time to address a Nicki Minaj question.”
“Thanks haters!” she continued. “Lmaoooooooooooooooooooooooo. #BarbzWinAgain ahahhahaahhahahahahhahahahhahahahahhahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Even before Minaj clarified her politically charged lyric, fellow rapper Talib Kweli weighed in, saying he didn’t think Minaj would choose the Romney-Ryan ticket.
“I doubt Nicki seriously supports Romney,” he wrote on Twitter. “Her lyrics ain’t political. She just wants y’all to talk about her & she winning cuz it’s working!”
