Savannah Guthrie hasn’t made a huge dent in the Today show’s ratings since she became co-anchor of the NBC morning news program two months ago, but she still has full support from her colleague, Natalie Morales.
“Savannah’s doing a great job,” Morales, 40, revealed to Celebuzz at the 2012 ALMA Awards on Sunday. “I’m so happy for her. When all of this was happening, I wanted her to have that job. She really is made for that job.”
Guthrie, 40, replaced Ann Curry on July 9 amid an ongoing ratings war with ABC rival Good Morning America.
Since then, the Today show has continued to struggle to increase its viewership; despite experiencing a boost during NBC’s coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, Today once again fell behind GMA for the majority of August.
As far as what Today has planned to reclaim its throne as the number-one morning news program, a title it held for 16 years until April, Morales said the show will continue to bring its A-game.
“Every day we … give it 200 percent of our effort,” she said. “We’re working with producers to try to figure out what’s working, what’s not working, how [we can] change things up a little bit. We’re interested to hear what America has to say about that, and what they want to see more of, and what they want to see less of. I think we’re trying to figure it out.”
“We’ve got the best team,” she continued. “We’re a family, and we’ve struggled. Like all families, you have your highs and lows. We’re struggling. But I think at the end of this, we’re gonna be so much stronger for it. I think there’s always a cycle … We’ll come right back.”
Morales joined Today in 2006 as a national correspondent. She currently serves as its news anchor.
