When Analeigh Tipton debuted a super-short cut at an event late last year, we never would have guessed she had taken matters into her own hands. Quite literally.

“I cut it myself really drunk one Sunday — true story,” she told PEOPLE at a party celebrating her new film Mississippi Grind held at Chase Sapphire on Main at the Sundance Film Festival. “I was so excited.”

Wearing it in a mohawk the first day she cut it, the actress, 26, then “went and got it fixed ’cause it had like, giant chops,” she shared, laughing.
So why did she decide to make the drastic change? “I’ve always had really long hair and I was kind of sick of always feeling like I had to be a certain way when I’m not that way,” she explained.
Added the actress: “I think every woman should cut their hair. It’s very liberating and terrifying.”
