When it comes to hair color, Nicole Richie is famously fearless. So the star’s shade switch, from midnight blue to bright pink, wasn’t a major shock. And neither was her reasoning behind the change: That there was no real reason at all!

“It all came about very spur of the moment,” the 33-year-old Candidly Nicole star told PEOPLE. “Andy Lecompte, who does my hair, is coincidentally one of my best friends. We have grown up together — I kind of started my career at the same time as he did, and that’s just been the nature of our friendship. And it’s been him experimenting on my hair [for years].”
So when the two get together, hair alchemy is usually in the offing somewhere. “I was at home house one day, [Lecompte and I] had the music going, and it kind of just happened,” she said. “It was on a random Tuesday. It was very spur of the moment.”
With all of the styles and shades Richie has previously experimented with, what exactly did Richie’s 7-year-old daughter, Harlow, think of her new pretty pink hue?
“She loves it! She’s so used to it at this point,” she told PEOPLE. “Her dad has been wearing colored hair since she was born, so it’s something she — both of my kids — embrace it. They love it, their friends like it, so it’s fun.”
