As PEOPLE readers know, there’s nothing the style team loves more than a big red-carpet hair change debut. And the queen of the red carpet, Giuliana Rancic, has a big reveal in store, though she’s sharing her recent hair overhaul — a cinnamon-tinted style — a few days before the Oscars. She talked to PEOPLE about the reasons behind her big hair change — and how switching up her look keeps things fun at home with her husband!

“I’ve been blonde for about six months now and I always know it’s time for a change when I look in the mirror and I’m not excited any more,” she says of the inspiration behind the change. “I had that feeling recently where I just got used to seeing my blonde hair every day and there wasn’t anything exciting about it. And with the Oscars coming up, what better time to make a statement on the red carpet and in real life? And I’m not going to lie — I definitely was inspired by some of the presenters and nominees and their gorgeous hues, as far as incorporating some hints of auburn in my hair.” (Should we hope for a twinning moment with fellow redhead Emma Stone on the big night?)
The TV host underwent the transformation with the help of Vidal Sassoon’s Salonist color in “Medium Gold Brown,” and she shares that while she wasn’t nervous at all, her glam squad was — just a bit! “Since it was a bit before the Oscars, my stylist and makeup girls were pretty nervous. I really do believe that changing your hair color in a drastic way is exhilarating, and it’s something I really do embrace. I love the feeling of doing something drastic overnight when it comes to my hair. What is the worst thing that can happen?”

She shares that the change has been in the works for a ” couple of weeks — I loved the blonde until about a couple of weeks ago. I kept changing my makeup routine and wardrobe palette, and was left still feeling unsatisfied, then realized, wait a second, it was my hair color that had become bland and I was getting bored with it.” So she committed to the change, put on Little Izzy and Big Sean (“with a touch of Drake”) and got to work.
And number one on her cheering squad? Husband Bill, of course! “Bill is so supportive of every hair change I make. When I’ve told him that I’m going to color my hair, he gets so excited for me,” she says. “He loves the experimental side of me that is fearless, fun and doesn’t take myself too seriously. I think it’s fun as a man to have your wife or girlfriend come home with a different hair color every once in a while to mix things up. It can be super sexy to spice things up.”
Rancic is revealing the change on social media as well, and she says she can’t wait to see what her fans (and her Fashion Police cohosts!) think of the new look. But ultimately, she’s doing it for herself. “I feel revived and rejuvenated since getting it done,” she says. “I absolutely love trying bold colors and beautiful rich hues which make me feel younger and more exotic.”
