Transgender Model Andreja Pejic Returns to the Runway for the First Time Since Her Female Transition

London Fashion Week was a monumental moment for transgender model Andreja Pejic — she made her first appearance at a women’s show since transitioning to a female in early 2014. And she totally owned the catwalk.

The 23-year-old Serbian-born star stepped out on the Giles runway Monday — one year after her sexual reassignment surgery. Previously, the androgynous model walked in both male and female shows, for designers including Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott and Jean-Paul Gaultier.

After the show, Pejic shared a photo on Instagram of her Giles look — a black-and-white high-collared ensemble and a bold, dark lip. “It feels amazing to be making my runway debut for one of my favorite British designers #Giles Thank you to @kegrand and @guineapiggiles #thereturn #LFW,” she shared.

Joining Pejic on the runway were fellow catwalkers Kendall Jenner (who’s walked in just about every show this season), Erin O’Connor and Jessica Stam. And they all happily snapped selfies together backstage.

Before her surgery, Pejic said she always knew she was transgender — even as a child. “I always dreamt of being a girl,” she told PEOPLE. “One of my earliest memories is spinning around in my mom’s skirt trying to look like a ballerina.”

What do you think of Pejic’s modeling debut as a female? Do you hope to see her in more fashion campaigns?
