Hugh Jackman has quite a hair history. He went bald for this summer’s upcoming Pan, got a choppy buzz-cut for Les Misérables and has had a backwards-flared do as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise. Now in the new robo sci-fi flick Chappie, he rocks a mullet.

As it turns out, the Aussie actor didn’t have any qualms sporting the often polarizing “business in the front, party in the back” hairstyle: It just comes with his line of work.
“I cannot remember the last time I walked into a hairdresser’s and said, ‘I would like such-and-such a haircut,’” Jackman, 46, told PEOPLE with a laugh at the N.Y.C. premiere of Chappie Wednesday.
“In 20 years, luckily — because I’ve been working — I do whatever hair’s required.”

Director-producer-screenwriter Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, District 9) pitched the hairstyle, and Jackman happily complied.
“This was actually Neill’s idea, and it was perfect for the character,” says Jackman, who plays a villain opposite Sigourney Weaver, Dev Patel and rapper Die Antwoord in the South Africa-set film, in theaters March 6.
