Lou Reed and Metallica may be getting pummeled elsewhere, but the one fan they have is perhaps the only one that matters — Darren Aronofsky. The visionary directed a video for Loutallica’s “The View,” which IFC premiered, merging these artists in a way that their music almost (ALMOST) starts to make sense.
“The first time I heard ‘The View’ I was stunned,” Aronofsky said in a press release. “It was a marriage that on the surface made no sense, but the fusion changed the way I thought about both artists and morphed into something completely fresh and new.”
Reed’s thoughts? “Possibly the best video ever made. Black and white filmic noir.”
Aronofsky was originally supposed to direct a video for “Iced Honey,” but once they started âit became obviousâ âThe Viewâ was the way to go.”
The black-and-white cinematography on “The View” starts out soft, but progressively gets more disturbing — shaky, distorted shots alternate between Metallica and Reed, playing the two off each other in a strangely effective way. Could Aronofsky could make a Loutallica believer out of you, or is this pairing still the worst collaboration of the year?
