Kerry Washington says she found her love for all things style later in life, but when it comes to channelling her “Scandal” character Olivia Pope, fashion has been a major factor since day one.
The 38-year-old star covers Net-A-Porter’s The Edit this week, and in an interview with DKNY’s Aliza Licht, Washington says that she gets into character by literally walking in Pope’s shoes.
“The biggest thing for me are the shoes,” she says. “I’ll wear Uggs around set, but I can’t rehearse a scene in them because I don’t feel like Olivia until I put the shoes on. Shoes define how you walk in the world and how you stand, like: what is your posture in life?”
When it comes to her real life, Washington describes herself as a “moody dresser.” She adds, “For the red carpet, I’m totally a stiletto girl. But in the rest of my life, I’d say I’m 50/50. I love a good heel, but I also have a really great sneaker collection. That’s the Bronx girl in me.”
