NEWPORT, R.I. – Grammy-winning jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding and veteran trumpet player Wynton Marsalis are among the performers set to play at the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival.
Festival organizers announced the lineup for the three-day event Tuesday. The festival will take place on Aug. 5-7 in Newport.
Spalding, who sings and plays standup bass, won the Grammy for best new artist this year, beating out teen sensation Justin Bieber.
The festival, founded in 1954, has a new sponsor this year. Alex and Ani, a Rhode Island jewelry manufacturer, takes over for medical product maker CareFusion. Another change to this year’s festival is its new status as a nonprofit.
Organizers for the Newport Folk Festival, which will take place on July 30-31, are slated to announce this year’s lineup on March 29.
